Plant-Loving Volunteers are Needed!

The Whidbey Island Conservation District is looking for volunteers to sort and bundle the plants for the orders from our Annual Native Plant Sale.  Come join us at Greenbank Farm for a few hours, by yourself or with a friend.  No plant knowledge is necessary, but this is a great opportunity to meet others who love plants!  Those who commit at leat 2 hours will receive a special plant gift.

WE HAVE THREE DATES TO FILL:

Wednesday, February 29, noon to 4 PM -  We'll be counting and grouping bare root stems in to bundles of 5.

Thursday, March 1, 1:00 - 3:30 PM - We'll be packing orders for Friday pick up.

Friday, March 2, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM - We'll be packing orders for Saturday pick up.

Register to volunteer by contacting Sandy, Monday - Thursday, at 360-678-4708 or sandy@whidbeycd.org

Thank you!

How Does Our Plant Sale Process Work?

From November 15, 2011 thru January 30, 2012, we will be accepting pre-orders against our native plant inventory. We reserve this inventory from our Conservation District plant grower in Bow, WA and other native plant sources, based on sales from previous years. This is always a competitive process, as other Conservation Districts and vendors are also reserving their inventory for spring sales! The plants will then be harvested in late winter (while dormant) and delivered to us the last week in February.

When we receive your order, we verify that everything you want is still available from our inventory (so please don’t send money until your order is confirmed). If we run out of a species, we try to increase our order accordingly, but often local growers have presold all of their stock. This is why we encourage our customers to order early – you’re more likely to get everything you want.  Plus, if we do run out early, we have a better chance of finding more inventory.  There is also always the chance that an unexpected weather event can cause a particular crop to fail. In that case, we do our best to track down replacements or offer suitable substitutes.

Our pre-order sales end on January 31, and we spend February finalizing orders, confirming our inventory, and preparing for the arrival of our plants. In a whirlwind of activity over the course of 2-3 days just before the pickup dates, our intrepid volunteers help us bundle the plants into the pre-orders.  This year we are offering two pickup dates and locations – Friday, March 2, 1-6:00PM in Coupeville at our district office (1 NE 4th St), and on Saturday, March 3, 9:30AM – 1:30PM in Greenbank at the Greenbank Farm (big barn). Customers will need to select their pickup location when ordering so we can have their order delivered to the selected location.  There is the possibility that unsold inventory will be available for sale at the Saturday pick up date in Greenbank.

Please consider volunteering to help with our bundling. It’s fun, no expertise is required, and you will get to pick up your order early! If you’re interested, please email sandy@whidbeycd.org.

So, support your local conservation district, and place your plant order early.  Go natives!
